Portable Posse

How did I not know about Urban Outfitter’s portable USB turntable, priced at a very reasonable $140? A little gimmicky for sure, but that wouldn’t stop me from buying this sonofagun. It’s designed exclusively for U.O., and comes in a nifty case. It’s compatible for MAC and PC users, and you only need a little software to get you going. The belt-drive turntable plays 7″ and 12″ records at 33 1/3, 45, and 78 rpm.

Here are the other features, from the U.O. website: Automatic return tone arm; diamond stylus needle; adjustable tone control; built in dynamic full range stereo speakers; solid wood construction; vinyl wrapped; chrome snap closure; corner guards; metal and resin handle.

Forget the boombox, this is the summer of vinyl.

    irreplaceable needed/cartrage and belt driven?

these things have been around for years, you can get them anywhere else for like 50 bucks, they always sound like crap.

you can get a old turntable for 20 bucks and a DAC (RCA to USB) for another 20 and be “tru vintage” if you really need to be that trendy.

    pass.

I love the design of these new portable turntables, but if you’re really looking for good sound (as well as a headphone jack and pitch control) – aka, if you really want to listen to your music instead of bad speaker quality suitcases that your friends will stare at, get the ION Portable USB turntable. Urban Outfitters also has the ION available online. Sure it looks not as hipster, but the sound is much, much more chic.

Thanks @Jessica, I’ll def check it out. I’d be willing to sacrifice hipster-ness for good sound!

They are not exclusive to Urban Outfitters and have been around for a while now.

yeah, spend 50 bucks on a used soundcard, and 8 bucks on a used turntable at goodwill…
