Mega Mix Tape

There are so many awesome USB thingamajigs out there that sometimes I wish I had twice as many USB ports for my fan, turntable, and speakers. Good thing there’s this adorably retro Cassette Tape USB Hub to give my laptop accessories some extra juice. And for around $15, you can afford another USB toy to make full use of your new hub.
Just don’t try to shove it into your cassette player (if you still own one)…
Check it out here.
Modern Mixtapes

Mixtapes on cassettes have long been symbols of creativity and crushes. If you liked someone, you made them a mixtape. Unfortunately, the CD and iPod playlist aren’t the least bit cute. And since most of us don’t use tapes or tape players anymore, the Suck UK USB Mixtape combo will have to do. It has the romance of cassettes and the novelty of electronic files. It’s got a fake cassette exterior and even a tracklisting insert, and inside you’ll find a matching USB stick that will hold about 2 hours of songs. It makes a perfect little gift for whoever you may fancy.

iPod in Wonderland

I’ve long moved on from my cute and functional white iPod headphones, but this (big) slice of nostalgia pie is pretty appetizing. Giant Ear Buds from Urban Outfitters connects to your computer, iPod or music system via standard headphone jack. They’re powered by USB, batteries or a wall adaptor. Can’t attest to sound quality, but for $40 they’re cute enough sans sounds.

Paper Planes (and Model Speakers)
“I fly like paper, get high like planes” and when you plug me in your puter, my music entertains… While I may not rhyme, I do appreciate cute and conversation-sparking designs. If you’re good with your hands (and not so good with tools) then this is the ultimate music-playing tool for you. The Princeton PSP-NXT retro stereo system paper model hooks up to your computer and uses 1 watt USB speakers to pump some semi-serious sound. You buy the paper model and the stereo separately and then use your crafty skills to make this nifty miniature.

Portable Posse

How did I not know about Urban Outfitter’s portable USB turntable, priced at a very reasonable $140? A little gimmicky for sure, but that wouldn’t stop me from buying this sonofagun. It’s designed exclusively for U.O., and comes in a nifty case. It’s compatible for MAC and PC users, and you only need a little software to get you going. The belt-drive turntable plays 7″ and 12″ records at 33 1/3, 45, and 78 rpm.
Here are the other features, from the U.O. website: Automatic return tone arm; diamond stylus needle; adjustable tone control; built in dynamic full range stereo speakers; solid wood construction; vinyl wrapped; chrome snap closure; corner guards; metal and resin handle.
Forget the boombox, this is the summer of vinyl.

Simply plug in this retro silver fan into your USB port and enjoy the breeze! And don’t forget to plug in your headphones to crank up the beats…

Trek Tech

I joined the Trekkie bandwagon last night – on IMAX no less – and was very, very entertained. Most movies bordering on two hours knock me right out, but Star Trek kept me on the edge of my seat (and sometimes even on the edge of tears).
I’m still definitely no true Trekkie, but even I can appreciate the fun of this USB VoIP phone in all its Captain Kirk glory. This Star Trek USB Communicator, from USB Geek, has a built-in microphone and speaker that works with Skype and all the major online messaging systems. You connect it via USB, and it works with Windows XP, Vista and Mac OS X 10.5.
The bonus for Spock jocks? Flip it open (a la Kirk), press a button and 21 sound effect from the original Star Trek series. But for only $45, there’s no teleportion included…

Turning Tricks on Tables
I have much respect for the talented DJ’s behind ADD, and must confess that I’m pretty (ok, totally) clueless about turntables and the technology behind them. I’m just happy to boogie to the beats they produce.
Doing a little turntable online shopping (Amazon and Craigslist excluded), I found out that if I had a few thousand dollars to blow (and a better sense of beats), I could be the proud owner of a badass turntable. Never mind vibrations, suspension or motor power – let’s just take a look at the pretty, shiny things.
The TTi USB Turntable is one example of hot technology, with USB connectivity, a built-in universal dock for Ipod and the software to transfer your vinyl collection straight to your Ipod or CD. It also features Gracenote® MusicID technology, which analyzes your vinyl and automatically retrieves album, artist and song information for you. All for less than $300! The fact that it’s apparently easy to use and looks absolutely gorgeous also helps.
Stepping it a notch in the price department is the Avid Acutus Reference Turntable. For the price of a decent car – $24,000 – you can be a real DJ with this polished-chrome masterpiece. Besides its unique architecture and obvious drama, there’s not much else I understand about it. It’s been described as “neutral, accurate and truthful,” three words that make more sense in reference to a Swiss watch.
Speaking of Swiss technology, let’s take a look at another brand of turntable. If the Avid Acutus Reference Turntable is a Honda Civic, then the DaVinci Audio Labs Luxury Edition Turntable is a BMW 3 Series. At least for $41,250 you can get yourself some gold (mind you, the price of the turntable fluctuates with the price of gold). While the white/24k gold model looks kind of like a glorified ice bucket, it’s apparently a pretty solid turntable. With an absolutely stable power supply, a high stable basis and totally silent magnetic bearings, it seems that this is the Mona Lisa of turntables.
I think I’ll have to stick to the dancefloor (it’s all I can afford when it comes to these beauties).
