FEATURED: V-MODA Vibe II

Today I had the best workout ever. And not because I chugged a protein shake, or had 10 hours of sleep (I totally didn’t). It’s because today, as I ellipticized, I was finally listening to music without it being drowned out by a perpetually squeaky treadmill. And I owe it all to my hot new V-MODA earphones, which make everything but the music just melt away.

Nice package

Nice package

I recently received a sleek pair of V-MODA Vibe II earphones in equally slick packaging (first impression counts!). The earphones are equipped with a microphone for hands-free use, but it’s very subtly integrated into the V-MODA design. What’s also surprising is its black Kevlar-reinforced fabric cable, which is such a nice departure from the typical bendy plastic iPhone earphone (and a lot more hardy). A control button lets you pause, play and flick through your tracks. I noticed early on that certain songs made it sound like I was listening in at a live concert – it’s obvious that the acoustics are top notch. Crisp highs, deep rich bass.

Four sizes of medical-grade silicone fittings comes with each earphone, so whether your ears are Shaq-sized or Tila Tequila tiny, you’re guaranteed a perfect fit. Sporty earhooks and 34 inches of cable also make sure that running around poses no threat to your music listening.

These babies are compatible with all Apple products and most smartphones and music phones. The microphone works with VOIP, Skype, iChat and instant messaging. For now, I’ll be focusing on listening to a range of music genres to see how they sound with the Vibe II. Electro, house, indie and rock sound so good so far…

The Vibe II finally merges fashion, function and an incredible listening experience. Available in Nero (black) and Chrome Rouge for $128. Find out more about Vibe II here.

Earful Review – Under $175

For some real earphone longevity and lots of loudness, here is a selection of high(er)-end earphones to make your music sound better. This is a bit of an awkward price range, because earphones priced between $100 and $200 are a mix of great sound and good fit, but without the extra perks of really high-end versions. Audiophiles who are happy to handle un-perfect frequency, bass or fit will appreciate this price range and what it has to offer.

For $150, the Etymotic hf5 High-Fidelity Noise-Isolating Earphones is a mouthful and an earful. Priced between low-end and ultra expensive earphones, the hf5 delivers clear sound and looks good doing it. With the earphones, you receive a filter-changing tool and an extra set of filters, which are inserted in the earphone opening to make the frequency smoother and stop earwax from affecting the earpiece. And that’s important when it goes in so deep! That’s what she said..

With these earphones, the price tag may just reflect the name behind them. Monster Beats by Dr. Dre Tour def have a distinct look and super long earpieces. So unless you have long ear canals, they may be a bit uncomfortable. Its cable is impressively thick and flat and should hold up as long as Dre’s career.

Taking another look at styling red earphones, check out the V-Moda Red Roxx version. A little more Diddy than Dre, these don’t look anything like the run of the mill white iPod headphones. I covered the V-Moda Bass Freq earphones as a less expensive pair, and boy do they look less pricey.  Though they don’t seem very sporty, they’re known to be great for a workout. And what about the sound? Crisp and clear, apparently. The accessories include a gold leather pouch, six pairs of clear and two pairs of black silicone fittings. All for around $101.

I don’t know why I find the Westone UM1 Single Driver earphones kind of gross-looking. They remind me of some sort of machine-ET-baby thing. I’m pretty sure I saw these guys in “Alien vs Predator.” Anyways, Westone is a company thats expertise falls in making professional ear moulds and earplugs for musicians, so it’s natural that they’re also making earphones. This model is great for someone who listens to a wide variety of music. Surprisingly, though, they’ve had some criticism for their fit, which can require some readjusting when you’re wearing them. But for $109, the sound quality is a real deal. If you don’t mind the look of them…
