Woodness Goodness
Posted by ADD K.S. in Art & Design, Shopping, Vinyl, musick on April 1st, 2010
Full disclosure: I have a pair of Timbre earphones, am a big fan of hardwood floors and love forest-filled strolls. So it should come as no surprise that I’m totally smitten by the Nixon headphones and earbuds, which use the warm wooden tones in their designs. I’m particularly fond of the Wire 8mm earbuds, because they’re so darn sleek and relatively cheap — $40 will get you these statement-making grains.

The age-old predicament of how to keep your ears warm in the winter while wearing headphones has just been solved. Just put the phones in this slouchy hat’s side pocket and crack up the volume while cranking up the heat. Creative headgear by Etsy seller Escaodesign for $55.

Do the holidays have to be over? This festive UrbanEars campaign makes me full of that damn yuletide longing.
Knit Tunes
As the degrees drop, listening to music in the great outdoors gets increasingly unpleasant. If your ears freeze right off too, consider these knit headphones. They’ll keep you toasty as you blast your tunes. Available at Urban Outfitters.
Limited Smith Headphones

Mr. Paul Smith certainly knows how to create wonderfully designed objects, and these Audio-Technica full-size stereo headphones are no exception. Last year, I wanted a Paul Smith limited edition Holga camera for Christmas. This year, these headphones would definitely do the trick. They feature a gold aluminum housing (complete with Smith’s signature), and arrive in a spiffy Paul Smith travel pouch. Available from Paul Smith.

Sometimes less is more, and these headphones prove that Scandanavian minimalism can be just as eye-catching as balls out bling. Urbanears offers three models in simple style: Plattan, Tanto and Medis, with 14 color variations. All models come with cable fabric covered cable extensions with a built-in microphone.

Hand Stand
Ok, this has nothing to do with your hands. But if you haphazardly leave your headphones (heaven forbid your expensive headphones) lying around, then this stylish solution is at least high-five worthy. Unfortunately, if you don’t have $179 dollars to leave your headphones feeling loved, then this Omega stand may be a thumbs-down… Here’s some info from their site:
The Omega’s design has been granted a design trademark by the European Union already. The stand is ideal for any serious listener who does not want to see his headphones discarded in some corner but is proud to show his love for music.
The flat surfaces of the Omega mean even pressure to the earpads and thus will prolong your listening pleasure as they keep their shape much longer. The Omega is large enough to support very large headphones like a Sennheiser HD 800 or the round models by Stax as well.
If you want to find out more about this curvy wooden stand, check out their site here.

Stacked With Stax

The first thing that popped into my head when I saw these headphones? Straight up George Foreman grilling. This may be a bit of a morbid thought when looking at something that sits on either side of your head, but these headphones look like they can grill some serious steak. These are solid headphones.
Stax has been making these electrostatic headphones since 1960, and the company is known for their rectangular shape of the Lambda “earspeakers” that date back to almost 30 years ago. The earphones pictured have an open-air design that supposedly optimize the sounds that reach your ears.
If you’re new to the term “electrostatic,” here’s a great definition from Analog Apartment:
Traditional headphone use a moving coil technology where a larger magnet creates a static electromagnetic field. An audio current is passed through a voice coil that is attached to the diaphragm. This reacts against the static electromagnetic field from the larger magnet, causing the diaphragm to move the art and thus create the sound. In an electrostatic headphone, a thin, electrically charged diaphragm sits between two perforated metal electrode plates. An electrical sound signal is applied to the electrodes creating an electrical field. Depending on the polarity of this field, the diaphragm is drawn towards one of the plates. Air is forced through the perforations and combined with a continuously changing electrical signal driving the membrane, a sound wave is generated.
The sound it generates must be incredible, but for almost $1,000, I kind of wish they could at least cook up some veggie burgers…
Minimalist Mode

This week we’ve covered a pretty diverse handful of earphones, and this one isn’t any different (ie by being very different). The iP-595 iMetal Enhanced Definition Earphones are like hyper-white iPod buds taken to the next level. This is what one might imagine would be the standard earphone in the future. With enhanced definition alloy metal earphones and a high definition condenser mic for voice control and recording, it sounds modern enough. As long as its sound matches the exterior…
