Rock On

If you’re not a fan of the futuristic, sleek and bare-bones music players, then check out this pre-historic radio. And since radios are kind of a thing of the past anyways, the Rock Radio makes total sense. This radio is part of Guus Oosterbaan’s cement-audio-series, and the big crack on the top was a result of the cement not allowing radio waves to be picked up. So Guus got hammer-happy and the result was something Fred Flinstone would be proud of.

Bead Beats

Sometimes, concept creations just go right over my head. The Chukka is an example of a really interesting concept music player that does just that.

Inspired by worry beads that you play around with to relieve stress, the Chukka is a kinetic-powered tactile music player. By messing around with the beads, you charge up the player through electromagnetic induction. If you’ve got busy fingers, this is supposed to keep you feeling calm, while keeping the battery strong. The materials are eco-friendly, while the data cable that links the two sections together is very flexible and easy to take apart.

The pics are pretty info-heavy, but even if I don’t understand exactly how it works, I know that this is one clever concept. The video explains things pretty clearly.

Sniff it Good

I may have seen this concept in a sci-fi flick ages ago, but apparently now it’s working its way to reality.  I don’t know how legit this is, but coming from a product/industrial design site, I figure that someone somewhere is cooking this up (foreshadowing pun). SMELLIT is the ultimate addition to your movie-watching experience. It stimulates another one of your senses – duh, smell – to bring you into the action and transport you to a different place. Each odor is contained in a cartridge (much like a printer cartridge) in a smell board.

Here’s how it works, as described on its website: as your DVD player reads the video and sound information from DVD, SMELLIT processes the same DVD, but the “smell card” decodes all the smell information from 10 to 20 seconds ahead of the actual scene so the odours have time to reach you. After decoding the smell information, the cartridge vaporizes a very small amount off concentrated “smell gel,” and the central fan equally distributes the smell in all directions. It can be loaded with 118 cartridges, each one with a different concentrated smell gel. All the cartridges can be easily changed and last 3 times more than a regular ink cartridge.

Personally, it’s already hard enough watching the Food Network without having my stomach rumble. Imagine smelling brick-oven goat cheese pizza and only having canned tuna in your home? Definitely not for the reluctant dieter…

Good Vibrations

How do you like your pancakes in the morning? Mixed with some Zeppelin? Blended with some Black Sabbath? Now you can put on your bass-heavy beats to beat your breakfast, thanks to Kenny Hopper’s sound vibration food mixer. Once you plug in your digital music player, the sound waves produced by the Electrolux Re-mixer will stir up your batter with flair. Kind of a total novelty, but cool nonetheless. Check out the video to see how this concept works…

Toilet Humor

I’ve been hearing news about funny man Ferrell drinking his own piss in an upcoming episode of Man versus Wild, and I have to admit I’ve been intrigued. I mean, eating reindeer’s eyeballs I can understand, but drinking a day’s worth of diet coke, coffee and cheap beer all passed between your legs? Well it might have previously been a challenge to turn pee into Evian while in the woods, but now it’s a cinch, thanks to the H2O Purifier by Leonard Manavella.

It’s a machine for turning that yellow stuff into clear stuff, made for emergency and unclean water areas. I guess it can also turn dirty water into clean water too. The diagrams explain it all, but you first have to pee on the Activated Carbon to rid your urine of its color and “flavor.” Then you squeeze the container and drink up! Just make sure you chug from the right end…

Strangelove for Dr. Hard Drive

For the chic geeks reading, I thought this doctor-inspired techie tool would be sure to get oohs and aahs. This concept hard drive, by Hyuh Jin Lee, gives your laptop some love (and a dose of virus vaccine). It also recovers corrupted files. It’s an IV drip bag y’all. When you plug it into your laptop, the vaccine software can be operated from your screen. And like any good little drip bag, it blinks and flashes when you’re using it.

Willy Wonkers

Bland white walls aren’t my style, but I don’t know if shockingly bright banana print wallpaper is either. What makes this brand of  wild wallpaper so reedeming, however, is that it engages more than just one sense. Sight and smell baby. It’s scratch-and-sniff wallpaper! Willy Wonka would be proud of this collection from Flavor Paper.

Irresistible Picture Post

Something about this is so practical and so inspired that I couldn’t resist posting it. I’d almost consider owning a bird just so I could hook up this contraption. Also, I’d take any excuse to eat more bread…
