Cassette Corpses

Now this post may be a bit morbid, but I hope you can find some beauty in the decay. Brian Dettmer pays homage to the demise of analog (though we all know it’s far from dead) with sculptural skeletons made from altered cassette tapes. Each sculpture has a different theme – like heavy metal and hard rock. The most impressive part? Each piece is made without glue, tape or anything besides actual cassettes. Just heat and his own hands!

I wonder how the death of digital would be best portrayed?

Mega Mix Tape

There are so many awesome USB thingamajigs out there that sometimes I wish I had twice as many USB ports for my fan, turntable, and speakers. Good thing there’s this adorably retro Cassette Tape USB Hub to give my laptop accessories some extra juice. And for around $15, you can afford another USB toy to make full use of your new hub.

Just don’t try to shove it into your cassette player (if you still own one)…

Painted Vinyl

I took another vinyl stroll through Flickr, and found some nice hi-fi stuff to post about. Flickr user Jay Tilston has a pretty sweet collection of music nostalgia, and here’s a little sampling of my faves:

Ghetto Bagster

This is definitely a little too literal for your everyday use, but for pretend beat blaring this is the perfect tote. The Loop NYC Ghetto Blaster Weekend Bag is big enough for all of your music accessories and then some. Faux-leather and faux-boombox make for a real eye-catcher…

Change The Tape

Even though the sight of cassette tape brings back awful flashbacks of yards of plastic tape and thumbs that were too big, I have to admit that these examples of “Tapeography” are pretty amazing. Artist and designer Ersinhan Ersin painstakingly drew out images using cassette tape after experimenting with it in font making.

If you’ve got patience and some old cassettes laying around, it probably makes for a straightforward DIY project. You could mount your design with pins and glue on board or canvas. Happy taping!

Cassettes Inside/Out

Though we all may remember cassette tapes as clunky, awkward and a pain in the ass to put back together, photographer Martin Senyszak has photographed our old analog friend into something classy, modern and very naked. The photos are part of a series called “Tape Anatomy,” which was part of his “Six Seconds from ‘69″ film project.

What do you think?

Be Kind, Rewind (and Remake)

Do you miss the days of hunching over a cassette, trying to get your cassette back in order so you can replay that Ace of Base song for the kazillionth time? Well you can get nostalgic about our pre-iPod era tapes without getting tangled up in plastic. Our A.D.D. Kissette Necklace is sweetly reminiscent and glow in the dark, so you can wear the 90s around your neck. Check out these other cool adaptations from our analog days.
